Edgar Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic
Sciences in 1973, as a result of his profoundly
moving experience
observing earth from outer space. Painter
Gordon Onslow Ford began a series of paintings
in
the early 1960’s exploring the concept of
"inner space" in a series titled Voyagers
in Space. Three monumental paintings
of Onslow Ford from the series will be exhibited.
Gordon Onslow Ford (1912-2003),
internationally-known artist and a member of
the Parisian Surrealists in the late 1930’s,
is known for his visionary art capturing the "inner
worlds."
He was historically important for his lectures on Surrealism during WWII
in New York in 1941 and their influence on Action Painting. He created a
refuge for
Surrealist artists in Mexico and established an art community with Jean Varda
on the ferry boat "Vallejo" docked at Gate Five in Sausalito in
the 1950’s. Onslow Ford spent his life in dialogue with scientists and researchers,
philosophers, poets and artists, as he explored and integrated these various
disciplines into his own views on consciousness. He wrote many books including Painting
in the Instant (1964), Creations (1978), Insights (1991)
and Once
Upon a Time (1999). His work has been exhibited internationally and
is in major art museums. He was the co-founder of the Lucid Art Foundation
in 1998.
