What's New

EarthRise Bookstore and Gift Shop opened May 23, 2010. The store carries noetic books and cds authored by IONS research staff; a space travel section featuring IONS founder Edgar Mitchell's books; Earthrise posters signed by Edgar; and books by retreat center workshop leaders and others on topics of interest to retreat participants. You will also find wine, jewelry, scarves, gifts, cards, a children’s section and various sundries and snacks. The second bookstore-sponsored reading will take place Tuesday, June 29, featuring Dr. Tom Pinkson, author of the Shamanic Wisdom of the Huichol: Ancient Medicine for Modern Times.

We welcome Meridian University and Chi Healing, Inc. to our campus. These two organizations now occupy some of our office spaces, along with Veriditas, who has been located here for 18 months now, and all three are bringing their programs to our campus. In future newsletters we will feature more about each of them.

Global Citizen Year is a non-profit organization building a movement of young Americans who engage in a transformative “bridge year” between high school and college. They will return to host their initial training program on our campus in September. Through an innovative cross-sector model that partners with high schools and colleges in the US and NGOs around the world, they create opportunities for emerging leaders to work as apprentices in Asia, Africa and Latin America. By providing intensive training and support, they insure that their Fellows develop an ethic of service, the ability to communicate across languages and cultures, and a deep commitment to becoming agents for social change.

The model was conceptualized by Abby Falik, a social innovator who has dedicated her professional life to expanding opportunities for young Americans to learn about the world. Incubated at Harvard Business School with a team of graduate students from Harvard and MIT, today the Global Citizen Year team has grown to include leading experts in social enterprise, global development, international education and exchange, and higher education.

About Campus

Welcome to the Oak Glade

This fragrant grove invites you into its shady circle with a cool breeze and a play of dancing shadows through the branches of its surrounding trees. California Black Oak, which can reach the ripe age of 500 years, Coast Live Oak, and Valley Oak—stretching up to 100 feet high and 7 feet in diameter, surround the circle and commune with the pungent California Bay Laurels that were sought after for their medicinal uses—such as poultices for aching muscles and arthritis—by the Coastal Miwok tribes who once inhabited this land.
