Extraordinary developments are emerging on IONS' campus in Petaluma, California.
In 2000, the board of directors approved
the purchase of nearly 200 acres of land with facilities for
programs, research, a retreat center, and administrative offices.
Since then, there has been a growing appreciation for our
connection with the natural world and a deepening sensitivity
to the needs of the many animals, trees and plants with whom
we share the land.
Since 2000, we at the institute have been enhancing
our environs while adhering to eco-efficient, green building
guidelines. Improvements include the renovation of the community
center, dining commons, office space, and retreat center accommodations.
A consciousness research laboratory has been completed. Land-based
projects include: a network of trails through the forest;
water catchment ponds for wildlife and garden irrigation;
soil enrichment; habitat restoration; and treatment of diseased
oak trees.
Several garden projects are underway. The
community center garden provides an elegant outdoor, large
group meeting space, and includes aesthetically pleasing native
materials and a circulating water feature. Organic gardens
utilizing permaculture techniques are producing organic vegetables
for the retreat center.
The institute's Site Committee is developing a comprehensive master plan based upon the principles of regenerative design and sustainable practices. Plans will include additional facilities for educational programs and research, offices for strategic partners and colleagues, a bathhouse and hot pools for the retreat center, solar energy, wastewater treatment systems, and much more.

sustainable development of the institute's property, and
